What is Mir\u00f3’s Mosaic on Las Ramblas?<\/h2>\n\n

It is an untitled<\/strong> work, created by Joan Mir\u00f3 in 1976.It is a large circular mosaic of vivid colors (red, blue, yellow, black and white) embedded directly into the pavement of Las Ramblas, near the Liceu.<\/p>\n\n

Many tourists step on it without paying attention. But for those who know how to look, it is a symbolic door to Mir\u00f3’s universe… and to the soul of Barcelona. <\/p>\n\n

Why Did Mir\u00f3 Create This Mosaic?<\/h2>\n\n

The Barcelona City Council commissioned Joan Mir\u00f3 to create a work to symbolically welcome<\/strong> all visitors arriving in the city.<\/p>\n\n

In the 1970s, Barcelona was beginning to open up to the world again after decades of dictatorship, and Mir\u00f3\u2014deeply connected to his hometown\u2014enthusiastically accepted the commission.<\/p>\n\n

His idea:<\/strong>To create a mosaic that symbolized the free, welcoming, and creative spirit of Barcelona, right in the heart of its most popular promenade.<\/p>\n\n

The “Secret” of the Mosaic: A Cosmic Welcome<\/h2>\n\n

The mosaic was not designed just as a decoration: it is a message.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Joan Mir\u00f3, fascinated by the cosmos, wanted the mosaic to represent a point of connection between heaven and earth<\/strong>, between the traveler and the city.<\/p>\n\n

    The mosaic is on Las Ramblas<\/strong>, at the level of the Gran Teatre del Liceu<\/strong>, very close to the Liceu metro station (L3).<\/p>\n\n
